Congrats! I loved this audio note/podcast vibes so much, esp listening to it while I made your zucchini bread baked oats (from memory?! So proud), would absolutely be a dedicated listener to any future podcast of yours! Loved your comments on the Holiday. As for ice cream: generic is mint chip on a very hot day / chocolate on a less hot day. Niche might be Canadian only but it's moose tracks - vanilla with fudge swirl and mini peanut butter cups
I went to college in St. Louis!! One of the best most underrated cities- especially for food!! I still dream about the Kaldi’s avocado toast- I’d always get it with the candied bacon, which combined with their hot sauce was the most divine flavor combo ever. I know you don’t eat meat but the sweet/hot combo!! And now I live in LA and I’d say the farmers market you need to try is Silverlake! The way that you described the prospect park farmer’s market is how I’d describe silverlake! But as for ice cream- coffee chocolate chip is my favorite grocery store ice cream, and my favorite niche is from a local ice cream shop in my home town (outside Philadelphia)- their chocolate with their peanut butter sauce and Reese’s. It’s divine. My celiac ass misses Ben and Jerry’s half baked so much!!
Alsoooo I don’t think you posted your nori crusted beans in a post here but I have Instagram deleted rn for a cleanse so I can’t message you :/ what would you serve as sides alongside the beans as the main course? Maybe rice and a veg? thanks!!
Yes! Rice and stir fried veg is usually a great pairing, I also like to serve it alongside congee, if you're into that. The creamy/crispy combo is pretty fantastic.
Favorite niche flavor: either NC State University’s Wolftracks (similar to moosetracks) or Goodberry’s (technically frozen custard but tomayto/tomotto) chocolate chocolate chip.
Justine!!! Congrats!!! This audio message inspired me to get the fancy substack app bc I needed to be able to rewind/fast forward which also means now I can comment! but I’m OBSESSED yes pls giving us mini podcasts. also I recently had this exact ice cream discussion with someone I just started dating and my answers are vanilla/brown butter almond brittle from jeni’s. knowing the niche flavor is so important!
Ok I love how the ice cream discussion is universal - niche flavors are a MUST! Yours also sounds bomb btw - and thank you for the engagement well-wishes!
Congratulations! Recently married myself and even if you’ve been living with someone for a while, something just feels different after the ceremony, hard to pin point but just tighter, in sync, comfortable.
Anyway, digression over. Just wanted to tell you I decided to swap out the cinnamon for a touch of smoked paprika in the carrot biscuits (because as you well know, it’s hard to just “stick to the recipe”) and geez but I may have been on to something - I mean you were on to something and I just went off piste a teeny bit. A delicious detour.
Niche: Ben & Jerry’s sweet like sugar cookie dough core!!!!!! Pretttty sure it is discontinued but it was half hint of almond sweet cream ice cream with short bread cookies half cherry ice cream with cherry pieces with a sugar cookie dough core. It was heaven.
What is your Goodreads account? I’d love to add you as a friend🫶
My Goodreads is SO neglected - I don't even know my username? But once I get it all ship-shape I'll let you guys know! (PS - fantastic niche choice, I love the cores idk why)
Congratulations!!! So happy for your engagement, and looking forward to wedding updates!!!
I love, love, LOVE the audio! I listened to it with Earl Grey tea and Wild Orange diffusing, sitting in the morning sun. Please don't edit, let it be real and authentic - Alexa, laundry, and all. :-)
I have been making and sharing your zucchini-banana bread. Everyone loves it! Hugs! <3
Thank you so much for the well wishes! And I LOVE hearing you liked the podcast, you listened to it exactly how I was hoping people would, as just a few minutes to relax :) PS, love your ice cream choice <3
Favorite generic ice cream is also coffee :) OR chocolate peanut butter (like chocolate base, peanut butter chunks). I am too much of a ride or die for these flavors that I RARELY venture out into niche but this has inspired me to try some more niche flavors so I have a cool answer in the future.
Also the sharpen the knives anecdote (or metaphor? lol) made total sense and I freakin love that!!!
Gah I'm so glad you like the metaphor! I'm just back from vacay and I'm telling myself I needed those days to sharpen my knives lol. And thank you for the engagement well-wishes, I'm so excited 🥹🥹
Congrats on your engagement 😊 loved the voice note and totally think you should do more (or start a podcast!)
haha if I start one what would I call it though...SOS
